2019-2027
Shedd Aquarium Experience Evolution
As aquarium architects, VDT is helping shape Shedd’s Experience Evolution—a transformation designed to prepare the aquarium for the next 100 years of aquatic education. Key renovations include a new accessible entry sequence, improved circulation, and 200,000 gallons of added habitat space with immersive new exhibits.
2018
Shedd Aquarium Centennial Commitment Master Plan
In anticipation of its centennial, Shedd partnered with VDT as its master planning firm to envision the next 100 years. VDT’s work included extensive research into visitor arrival and accessibility, providing the foundation for future exhibits and building enhancements. Pictured above is a conceptual design for the Grand Hall, leading to a new education space and several historic galleries.
2007-2009
Shedd Aquarium Oceanarium Renovation and Addition
Building on the 2006 master plan, VDT, as Shedd’s aquarium architect, led extensive renovations to the Oceanarium. The project included new exhibits, a Beluga Whale encounter pool, updated visitor amenities, and 24,000 SF of new office space for Shedd staff.

Shedd Aquarium 2006 Master Plan
Shedd Aquarium’s 2006 master plan focused on identifying needed upgrades to the Oceanarium and charting future opportunities for the institution. VDT guided a comprehensive master planning process, conducting in-depth research on-site at Shedd as well as at leading peer institutions worldwide.
