As a compliment to the LEED Gold rated building design, VDTA was asked to develop unique environmental graphics for the Rita Atkinson Residences. Metal signage is used to define the building entries, drawing visitors and residents through the recreational courtyard. As a playful contrast to the building’s clean concrete exposed structure, a nine color gradient creates an inviting coding system for the floors. This system gradiates from blue on the first floor to red on the top levels, reminding inhabitants of the building’s connection to the ground and sky.
Graphic kiosks adjacent to the elevator lobbies highlight the sustainable initiatives of the project and the university at large. Students and campus visitors alike are brought to the residential landmark to learn about the University of San Diego’s forwarding thinking sustainable ideals. Alongside these kiosks, custom wallpaper was applied to the corridors of each floor. The wallpaper design abstracts the outdoor courtyards and pulls the landscape inside. As a final gestural node to the holistic design, the vibrant colors of the public spaces are extended into the individual housing units through the use of bright accents walls.
