Contractors have the reputation of casting doubt on the wisdom of almost any design. For the offices of Turner Construction Company in Chicago the design and contracting team formed a partnership to develop an appropriate image for this large contractor.
The palette of materials was kept simple, reflecting a sense of economy of means. This included sheet vinyl flooring, metal decking and off the shelf light fixtures. These elements were knitted together in a pattern defining the different work areas within the office. The dominant feature is a rippling plane of galvanized metal decking passing overhead from one end of the office to the other.
This river of metal is interrupted only at the entrance, where the ceiling is split by two vertical planes of translucent blue polycarbonate sheeting which defines the main entrance to the office space. As a whole the composition is both highly sculptural and colorful, but is based on simple materials used in a simple manner.
