Hyde Park is a uniquely diverse community made up of distinctive neighborhoods and wonderful architecture. It is anchored by the “world class” University of Chicago and civic institutions such as the Museum of Science and Industry and the Robie House. VDTA teamed with Mesa and Walsh to design a mixed-use development that would create a new, modern symbol of Hyde Park which would become an iconic destination for this special community.
The proposed competition design include, three major infill buildings, taking full advantage of the underutilized land. These buildings were proposed to include major office, hospitality and retail functions as well as a new residential housing component and a parking structure. The design reacts to the scale of the surrounding buildings, while creating a “gateway” to Hyde Park and providing public plaza space. By incorporating a wide range of uses on the site, the area would enjoy abundant additional pedestrian traffic at all times of the day and into the evening.
