As home base for what is now the global headquarters of eBay, Building 17 needed to act as a beacon within the company’s North Campus. The building’s exterior was designed to compliment the existing buildings on campus, making sure to evoke eBay’s brand and identity. It was important that the interiors highlighted the values of the corporation by being designed as a truly 21st century working environment that emphasizes the company’s commitment to sustainable strategies.
The 100% open office environment is housed on the building’s upper floors, complimented by a wide range of conference and informal collaboration spaces. The ground floor of the building includes a 500 seat dining facility, 12,000 SF fitness center and a large data center. To connect the multipurpose facility a simple but dramatic graphic system was developed around a matrix of circles. In addition, Building 17 was developed to have an environmental theme that is communicated through environmental graphics and its corporate art program. Each floor is named for a different sustainable strategy (air, sun, earth and water) with over seventy conference rooms containing a wall graphic providing a technical description of an unique sustainable strategy. This allowed for the building’s interiors to become essential to the public information program established by eBay to educate their employees and visitors.
In all, the building achieves an integration of design and sustainability in every facet of the design.
