In the world of high tech manufacturing it is not uncommon for products to be designed and piloted, then sold by the millions for a set delivery date regardless of whether a suitable manufacturing facility is in place or not. Such was the case with this project. This meant that the client had to be able to occupy and begin its laboratory and manufacturing operations within 3 months of purchasing the building. Despite the mission critical design and construction schedule, the project still had to meet a challenging budget.
This comprehensive phased renovation and expansion was designed to transform an aging 650,000 square foot manufacturing building into a modern, new office, production and research/development facility. The phase one renovation established new areas for large scale modem production and new office space. To maximize office space, a new mezzanine level was created overlooking new atrium space and a connecting corridor.
Ordinary materials typical of suburban office/manufacturing buildings were used in extraordinary ways. The client’s west coast roots are reflected in the color palette and use of light. At the same time the vast workplace is divided into a series of Chicago neighborhoods, helping to break down the interior environment into manageable units.
