Kresge: With its completion in February of 2006, the Kresge Foundation’s new headquarters in Troy, Michigan is getting attention for its elegant balance of sustainability, preservation and modern good looks. Publications such as the Contract, Chicago Tribune, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Detroit Free Press and AIA’s COTE notes have also noted Kresge’s commitment to sustainable design through its Green Building Initiative, a new grant program.

33 E. Main: Construction is complete on this 9 story 140,000 SF office building. It is the last project on Block 89 in Madison, Wisconsin, where Urban Land Interests has developed one of the city's best-loved mixed use properties.

1401 S. State: The South Loop is one of Chicago’s hottest residential markets. Over the past several years, most new development has been condominiums. Anticipating the upward pressure on interest rates, Lincoln Property Residential recently completed construction on this 278-unit rental property combining one- and two-bedroom loft style apartments. Ground-floor retail, a rooftop garden and structured parking compliment the residential units.

Halsted Blackhawk Block: Located just a few blocks from the bustling North/Clybourn Avenues intersection on Chicago’s north side, this two-acre site is in the middle of a dynamic mixed-use neighborhood. The first phase of the project includes an 85,000SF private school, which was completed in the fall of 2007. Phase two, completed in December 2008, includes a 180,000SF office/retail building and a 550-car parking structure.

Shedd Aquarium:
Billed as “The World’s Aquarium,” the John G. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago is the largest indoor aquarium in the world. The core facility at the Shedd is the original 1929 building designed by Graham Anderson Probst and White. With significant additions in 1991 and 2001, the Shedd has maintained its forward position with periodic well-executed exhibits and attractions. In 2004, VDTA was selected by the Shedd to develop a five year exhibit and facility master plan that will carry on the Shedd’s tradition of leadership.

Local 399: Local 399 hired Valerio Dewalt Train Associates to design a 43,000 sf building for their office and training facilities. Members of the Local 399 use the facility to attend classes, work in labs and take care of their membership business. The site, located on the Chicago River, is part of Chicago’s Brownfield Projects program. www.iuoe399.org

Walsh College: Walsh College is beginning an ambitious three-phase building program to increase capacity and flexibility at their Troy, Michigan campus. The first phase consists of a two-story 36,000SF addition that will house a new library, lecture hall, classrooms, and seminar rooms. This first phase is pursuing LEED certification; sustainable strategies include onsite stormwater cleaning and storage through bioswales and a constructed wetland, high performance thermal envelope, daylight harvesting, energy optimization for night occupancy, and improved indoor air quality. The second phase will be a 75,000SF interior renovation of the existing building that provides coherence for a building that has grown by accretion over the past 50 years. The third phase will be another 40,000SF addition located across a quadrangle created by the first phase.

Textura: This software development company purchased an existing semi-industrial building with the intention of converting it to their corporate headquarters. The industrial character of the building included minimal window openings, so the first decision was to replace the façade with an all glass enclosure to improve the daylighting qualities and image of the building. The building includes a monumental staircase to unify both floors, a cafeteria/employee lounge and special security rooms.
Construction was completed in December 2008.

U of C Lab School: The University of Chicago’s Laboratory School has chosen VDTA to remodel its existing nine-building campus and design over 200,000 SF of new facilities for Early Childhood Education and Arts programs. The project will support the school’s goal of increasing its enrollment and enriching its current academic programs.

UCSD Health Sciences Graduate Student Housing: In June, 2008, VDTA and Webcor Builders were selected through a best-value Design/Build competition to design and construct a 225 unit student housing facility on the University of California San Diego. Groundbreaking for this $56 million project is set for March 2009.

eBay Building 17: The first new building developed for eBay at their San Jose North Campus was completed in May 2008. Part of the 2,000,000SF Master Plan that will eventually include 11 buildings the five-story 197,000SF building features precast concrete panels in combination with a custom curtain wall system. The design draws on elements from the existing buildings on campus, which were recently renovated, along with original design elements that reflect eBay’s brand and identity. Designed to achieve a LEED Gold certification it features a rooftop photovoltaic array that is part of the largest such installation in California, supplying 17% of the campus’ energy needs.

US Bank: One of Madison’s most iconic structures, the US Bank building was originally designed by Bruce Graham of SOM in the early 1970s. The building was acquired by Urban Land Interests, a long time VDTA client, in early 2008. A series of functional improvements both internal and external are underway to update this landmark structure.
Constuction began in January 2009.

161 W. Kinzie: This 249-unit apartment development includes studio, one-, and two- bedroom units designed to fit the dwelling needs of young working professionals who are committed to an urban lifestyle. It is located in the River North area of Chicago, a bustling district that includes a dense mixture of residential, commercial, and mercantile buildings, as well as a vast array of retail and restaurant choices. The Loop is directly across the Chicago River, the Brown Line is directly in front and the Merchandise Mart is right across the street. The 390,000SF building also includes 30,000SF of retail and 129 dedicated parking spaces.
Construction began in the third quarter of 2008, with occupancy expected in early 2010.
